METS CHAT ROOM: Game #123; Miracle Mets honored.

The Mets honored their 1969 Championship team prior to tonight’s game. It was nice they recognized the widows of those who passed. It was a classy gesture, and sometimes it is hard to realize several of them are gone.

I’ve always loved when a franchise honors its past, and I’m glad the Mets did that tonight. I only wish the Mets had done it from the beginning when they opened Citi Field this spring. The Mets don’t have the winning history such as the Yankees and Dodgers, but they have a great history nonetheless and it should always be honored.

Tonight the Mets (57-65) continue their four-game series with the Phillies (69-50), with JA Happ (9-2, 2.66 ERA) taking on Tim Redding (1-4, 6.53).

Perez might miss next start

Oliver Perez aggravated his right knee on a play at first base last night and may not be able to make his next start, Sunday against Pedro Martinez and the Phillies.

Perez fell behind 4-0, but despite being ineffective, got the win because the Mets scored eight runs in the fourth inning. He worked the fifth but was replaced for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of that inning. Perez tweaked his knee when he stumbled running to first base. He was on the DL for two months earlier this season with right knee inflammation.

“I want to continue to pitch,” said Perez. “But, I have to take care of my knee.”

Nelson Figueroa or Tim Redding could start if Perez isn’t able.

Next year’s rotation?

Looking at what the Mets are throwing out there these days, it’s not hard to envision few changes with next year’s rotation. Can’t we write off a blockbuster trade because of the lack of minor league depth, and because we know they aren’t going to make another $100-million signing? John Lackey they aren’t going to get.

So, we’ll have Johan Santana as the ace, the struggling Mike Pelfrey still trying to piece it together, Oliver Perez because you know they can’t trade him, Jon Niese vying for a spot and John Maine if he’s healthy and they even tender him a contract.

Then we’ll probably see a different version of Tim Redding and Livan Hernandez, although, with few other options, I can see Hernandez Part II.

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #78; not excited.

OK … the Mets won yesterday at Milwaukee. So what? I’m not going to get excited about one win after a month of playing terribly.

Tim Redding (1-3, 6.35 ERA) has given up five homers in the last 17 2/3 innings pitched.

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #63; Murphy on spot.

Manager Jerry Manuel said today that as long as the team is winning he can live with the lack of production from Daniel Murphy and Fernando Martinez. The Mets are reasonably close to the Phillies, but they have only won three of their last seven games.

That’s hardly winning.

With each passing day, it is becoming more apparent the Mets are hanging in, but in need of an offensive infusion. Adam Dunn, anyone? He’ll be costly, but he will provide a 40-homer, 120-RBI bat the Mets desperately need.

Manuel also said Jose Reyes is at least a week away from beginning his rehab. Since the Mets are never right with these things, add some extra time.

Tim Redding (0-2, 6.18 ERA) is coming off a good start, giving up three runs over seven innings, June 11, against Philly.
