METS CHAT ROOM: Game #40; avoiding the broom.

The future is now for Daniel Murphy.

Murphy, the Mets’ first baseman of the future, will start at the position tonight in Los Angeles as the club attempts to avoid being swept by the Dodgers. Manager Jerry Manuel said Murphy would also start the three games in Boston.

Manuel has been going with Jeremy Reed and Fernando Tatis at first in place of Carlos Delgado, who underwent hip surgery Monday and will be out at least two months.

All I can say is it’s about time. Circumstances dictate drastic measures and that includes seeing if Murphy can handle the position. There’s only one way to find out, and that is to play him.

Here’s tonight’s line-up”

Jose Reyes, SS
Luis Castillo, 2B
Carlos Beltran, CF
David Wright, 3B
Daniel Murphy, 1B
Ryan Church, RF
Ramon Castro, C
Angel Pagan, LF
Livan Hernandez, P

When this series started Thursday I never imagined the Mets would be going for the sweep tonight. Never. But, they have played well in this series, and yesterday finally gave Johan Santana the run support he needed.

Mike Pelfrey looks to go 5-0 tonight, but it won’t be easy against Matt Cain. Also, Jose Reyes is out of the the line-up for the fourth straight game.

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Alex Cora, SS
Luis Castillo, 2B
Carlos Beltran, CF
Gary Sheffield, RF
David Wright, 3B
Daniel Murphy, LF
Omir Santos, C
Jeremy Reed, 1B
Mike Pelfrey, P

Notes:

* Jose Reyes will miss his fourth straight game with tendinitis in his calf.

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #35: Reyes out again.

Jose Reyes will sit again tonight with a calf injury and was a topic of trade talk on the radio this afternoon. Can we get over it? Reyes isn’t going anywhere. Neither is David Wright or Carlos Beltran. I don’t care where the Mets finish in the standings.

In other news, Carlos Delgado’s hip isn’t getting any better and is ticketed for the disabled list. Also, Tim Redding is expected to be activated to start Monday’s game at Los Angeles.

Tonight’s line-up:

Alex Cora, SS
Luis Castillo, 2B
Carlos Beltran, CF
Gary Sheffield, LF
David Wright, 3B
Ryan Church, RF
Jeremy Reed, 1B
Omir Santos, C
Livan Hernandez, P

Jon Niese goes today for the Mets. If they get a good outing from him they’ll have a decision to make because Tim Redding is ready to return. The Mets will also likely decide today to place Carlos Delgado on the disabled list with his lingering hip injury.

Important game last night for the Mets to come from behind to win. They did catch a break when Carlos Beltran stole third because he looked out. Beltran eventually scored the tying run and drove in the game winner with a bases loaded walk.

Here’s today’s line-up:

Jose Reyes, SS
Luis Castillo, 2B
Carlos Beltran, CF
Gary Sheffield, LF
David Wright, 3B
Fernando Tatis, 1B
Ramon Castro, C
Ryan Church, RF
Jon Niese, P

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #29; on a roll.

Five. Do I hear six? The Mets will try to extend their winning streak today behind John Maine, who has run hot and cold this year. When he’s cold, he usually has one bad inning – very Perez-like – that derails him.

Today, the Mets will be without manager Jerry Manuel, who was suspended for one game for bumping umpire Bill Welke Thursday night arguing the Shane Victorino play. Sandy Alomar Sr. will manage the team.

Here’s the line-up:

Jose Reyes, SS
Luis Castillo, 2B
Carlos Beltran, CF
Carlos Delgado, 1B
David Wright, 3B
Gary Sheffield, RF
Fernando Tatis, LF
Ramon Castro, C
John Maine, P
