METS CHAT ROOM: Game #62; O’s no pushover.

The Mets come limping into Camden Yards tonight losers of four of their last six games, including a 15-0 rout to the Yankees Sunday afternoon in Johan Santana’s worst outing of the season.

If the Mets think they’ll march into Baltimore and get well just by showing up they have another thing coming, because the Orioles can hit, and Mike Pelfrey has been very hittable lately, giving up 13 runs on 15 hits in his last two starts.

PELFREY: Trying to get on track.

PELFREY: Trying to get on track.

Manager Jerry Manuel has been accused of waffling on Daniel Murphy and Fernando Martinez; sitting them after saying they would play. However, both are in the line-up tonight even though they are struggling.

Here’s the line-up:

Alex Cora, SS
Fernando Martinez, LF
Carlos Beltran, CF
David Wright, 3B
Gary Sheffield, DH
Daniel Murphy, 1B
Brian Schneider, C
Luis Castillo, 2B
***
Mike Pelfrey, RP

Updates: Jose Reyes doesn’t appear any closer to being ready than when he was first placed on the disabled list. … Gary Sheffield’s knee is still bothering him. Including tonight, he has three games where he can rest as the DH. … Johan Santana said there’s nothing wrong with him physically. Santana will get an extra day of rest before his next start, Saturday against Tampa Bay. If he comes out of that start with his velocity down, then maybe it might be time to be concerned.

Not all losses are equal, and there’s no greater example than last night’s disaster when the Mets lost on Luis Castillo’s dropped Alex Rodriguez’s ninth-inning, pop-up. This was a game that was theirs. They didn’t play particularly well, but were one out away.

With John Maine on the disabled list, the Mets will go with rookie Fernando Nieve (0-0, 0.00 ERA) against Andy Pettitte (6-2, 4.22 ERA). It is not a good match-up for the Mets.

After the game, Mets manager Jerry Manuel said his team will show what it’s made of in how it responds.

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Luis Castillo, 2B
Alex Cora, SS
Carlos Beltran, CF
David Wright, 3B
Gary Sheffield, DH
Fernando Tatis, 1B
Ryan Church, RF
Omir Santos, C
Fernando Martinez, LF

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #54; Maine and makeshift lineup.

The Mets will take their patchwork lineup behind John Maine against the Washington Nationals tonight.

Maine, after a rocky start, hasn’t pitched too badly lately. He gave up three hits in six scoreless innings last Sunday to Florida before leaving with a stomach virus.

It wasn’t a fluke. He has given up three or fewer runs in five of his last six starts, and one run over his last 12 innings.

Maine has a 6-2 record and 4.04 ERA in 10 career starts against the Nationals

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Luis Castillo, 2B
Emil Brown, RF
Carlos Beltran, CF
Gary Sheffield, LF
David Wright, 3B
Fernando Tatis, 1B
Omir Santos, c
Wilson Valdez, SS
John Maine, RP

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #46; Santana and the broom.

SANTANA: Mets' fiery leader.

SANTANA: Mets' fiery leader.

The Mets go for the sweep tonight of the Washington Nationals. The Mets have been in this spot before, on the verge of a sweep against an inferior opponent, but somehow manage to stumble.

The odds of doing so tonight are greatly reduced with Johan Santana pitching. Santana is coming off an emotional victory last Friday over the Boston Red Sox.

Daniel Murphy is back at first base tonight, with Fernando Martinez batting seventh and playing right field.

For as long as Jose Reyes is out, it looks as if Angel Pagan will get the lion’s share of the time as the leadoff hitter whenever he’s in the line-up. Luis Castillo took a few turns there, but manager Jerry Manuel likes him batting second, which I have advocated all along.

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Angel Pagan, CF
Luis Castillo, 2B
David Wright, 3B
Gary Sheffield, LF
Daniel Murphy, 1B
Ramon Castro, C
Fernando Martinez, RF
Ramon Martinez, SS
Johan Santana P

Note: Carlos Beltran, who took a cortisone injection in his knee, is on target to return Friday. … Omir Santos was scratched with a bruised shin. … Oliver Perez’s knee is still bothering him. … Four of tonight’s starters weren’t on the Opening Day roster.

We begin with the news of Ryan Church and Jose Reyes being placed on the disabled list, and the announcement of the promotion of Fernando Martinez to the big club.

Also, the Mets acquired minor-league SS Wilson Valdez from Cleveland for cash considerations. Valdez will be placed on the 25-man roster.
