METS CHAT ROOM: Game #91; Two in a row?

The Mets (43-47) close their four-game series against the Braves tonight before a national TV audience for the second straight day. Fernando Nieve (3-3, 3.03 ERA), who has received no run support in his last three starts, will attempt to duplicate what Johan Santana did yesterday.

Santana was superb yesterday, but it was only a glimmer. One game does not mean a turnaround.

The same scintillating line-up will go against Javier Vazquez:

Angel Pagan, CF
Luis Castillo, 2B
Daniel Murphy, 1B
David Wright, 3B
Jeff Francoeur, RF
Jeremy Reed, LF
Alex Cora, SS
Brian Schneider, C
Fernando Nieve, RP

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #89; Pelfrey and makeshift line-up vs. Braves.

The Mets can leave Atlanta in a double-digit hole. Things are that bad for our heroes. Mike Pelfrey and a rag-tag line-up try to stop the bleeding.

Here’s the line-up:

Angel Pagan, CF
Luis Castillo, 2B
David Wright, 3B
Gary Sheffield, LF
Jeff Francoeur, RF
Daniel Murphy, 1B
Alex Cora, SS
Omir Santos, C
Mike Pelfrey, RP

Pelfrey (7-4, 4.47 ERA) is 2-3 with a 5.08 ERA lifetime against the Braves. Pelfrey is coming off a solid outing against Cincinnati in which he worked seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits.

Jair Jurrjens (7-7, 2.91 ERA) will start for Atlanta. He is 2-1 with a 4.00 ERA lifetime against the Mets.

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #83; Perez to the rescue.

In the clamor for leadership among the Mets, it’s all David Wright. I’m willing to bet that with Carlos Delgado gone next year Wright will be named captain.

Wright spoke for all his teammates last night after the Mets were blown away by the Dodgers.

“I just think we stink right now, we’re just not very good,’’ Wright said. “When you don’t pitch, you don’t hit, you don’t play defense, you’re not going to win very many games. We’re not playing very good baseball… I don’t think anybody’s having very much fun right now.’’

That’s an understatement.

Trying to stop the slide is the original slide-starter himself, Oliver Perez.

He’ll have this forgettable line-up behind him:

Alex Cora, SS
Daniel Murphy, 1B
David Wright, 3B
Gary Sheffield, LF
Ryan Church, RF
Jeremy Reed, CF
Brian Schneider, C
Luis Castillo, 2B
Oliver Perez, LP

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #81; Phillies go for sweep.

The Mets (39-41) close their three game series with the Phillies (41-37) today the way many of us though they would, by trying to avoid being swept. They have Johan Santana going for them, but that’s not the `get out of jail free card,’ it used to be.

Santana is 9-6 with a 3.34 ERA. He is coming off a bad start last Tuesday in Milwaukee in which he gave up five earned runs on nine hits in six innings. Since June 2, he is 2-3 with a 6.19 ERA. Very mortal numbers.

Today’s line-up vs. Phillies RP Joe Blanton (4-4, 5.08):

Alex Cora, SS

Daniel Murphy, 1B

David Wright, 3B

Ryan Church, RF

Nick Evans, LF

Jeremy Reed, CF

Brian Schneider, C

Luis Castillo, 2B

Johan Santana, LP

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #79; Phillies – nuf said.

With the way the Mets have played lately, they are very fortunate to go into Philadelphia within a whisper of the Phillies. Had the World Champs played like it, they could have a seven-game lead by now.

Livan Hernandez (5-3, 4.04 ERA), who has lost his last two outings, will start for the Mets. Hernandez has gone at least seven innings in six of his last eight starts, and he needs to do more of the same because the bullpen is now a shaky issue. Hernandez is 10-8 with a 3.36 ERA in 24 career starts against the Phillies.

Rodrigo Lopez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) starts for the Phillies. He is making his first Major League appearance since 2007 when he was with the Rockies.

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Alex Cora, SS
Daniel Murphy, 1B
David Wright, 3B
Gary Sheffield, RF
Ryan Church, CF
Fernando Tatis, 2B
Nick Evans, LF
Brian Schneider, C
Livan Hernandez, RP
