METS CHAT ROOM: Game #102; Snakes in.

Not surprisingly, Mets GM Omar Minaya was unable to pull off a trade by this afternoon’s deadline for a multitude of reasons.

The Mets had to balance out their place in the standings – six games behind in the wild card – and protecting their farm system. There was also the fact not one of the big names traded today (Jake Peavy, Nick Johnson or Victor Martinez) would compensate for all the injured players on the DL.

“We were just not able to get it done,’’ Minaya said. “We had some opportunities to do some things, but, in the end, I felt that what teams were asking for we couldn’t find a match.

“Unless it is someone we were going to hold on to beyond one year, we’re going to hold on to as many prospects as we can.’’

Meanwhile, the Mets start a four-game series against the Diamondbacks tonight. The tarp is on the field but the Mets are hoping to get the game in. However, it won’t start before 8 p.m.,

Livan Hernandez (7-5) goes against Doug Davis (5-10).

Here’s the line-up:

Angel Pagan, CF
Luis Castillo, 2B
David Wright, 3B
Jeff Francoeur, RF
Fernando Tatis, LF
Daniel Murphy, 1B
Omir Santos, C
Alex Cora, SS
Livan Hernandez, RP

Here’s how bad things are for the Mets’ offense: Ryan Church is the clean-up hitter. Yup, you read correctly. Gary Sheffield is out again after taking a cortisone injection in his knee. He believes he’ll be available this weekend against the Yankees. We shall see.

Fernando Nieve (2–0, 1.84) starts for the Mets after back-to-back quality starts. Can he keep riding the wave?

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Alex Cora, SS
Luis Castillo, 2B
David Wright, 3B
Ryan Church, RF
Fernando Tatis, LF
Fernando Martinez, CF
Nick Evans, 1B
Brian Schneider, C
Fernando Nieve, RP

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #69; keeping it together.

“We have to play in the fashion we did last night,” said Mets manager Jerry Manuel of how his team pieced together an impressive victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Mets played alert, aggressive baseball to back the strong pitching performance of Tim Redding. Tonight they’ll throw Livan Hernandez (5-1) at the Cardinals. Hernandez, as much as anybody, is responsible for the Mets only being 1.5 games behind the Phillies in the NL East.

It’s hard to believe the Mets are that close considering how they’ll played this month.

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Alex Cora, SS
Daniel Murphy, 1B
David Wright, 3B
Fernando Tatis, LF
Ryan Church, RF
Omir Santos, C
Fernando Martinez, CF
Luis Castillo, 2B
Livan Hernandez, RP

Fernando Nieve, who pitched brilliantly in his Mets debut against the Yankees last weekend, gets his second start tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays.

It’s hard to believe with how Nieve pitched that he couldn’t make Houston’s rotation. Then again, maybe last week was an aberration, but a good one. He was in the mid-90s and hitting the corners. Can’t ask for more other than to do it again.

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Alex Cora, SS
Daniel Murphy, 1B
Carlos Beltran, CF
David Wright, 3B
Gary Sheffield, LF
Ryan Church, RF
Brian Schneider, C
Luis Castillo, 2B
Fernando Nieve, RP

The Rays are in town with third baseman Evan Longoria, which begs the obvious comparisons to David Wright. Well, you can pick one. Who is it?

They just fixed the cable about an hour ago, but it is still spotty. Naturally, they came over an hour after their window.

I listened on the radio, but had no way to chime in. A little spice between Mike Pelfrey and Chase Utley. Yes, this is turning into a real rivalry.

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Luis Castillo, 2B
Alex Cora, SS
Carlos Beltran, CF
Gary Sheffield, LF
David Wright, 3B
Fernando Tatis, 1B
Fernando Martinez, RF
Omir Santos, C
Tim Redding, RP

NOTES: Daniel Murphy did not start in the Philly series. Says a lot. … John Maine said his shoulder is still hurting and could have some tests if there are problems in his next start Saturday vs. Yankees. Even so, Jerry Manuel said he’s not concerned. We’ve heard this before. … Carlos Delgado said he his feeling strong and believes he will return in time.
