Game #1 wrap/Phillies 6, Mets 2: Martinez’s tank on empty.

Jerry Manuel went out of his way not to throw Pedro Martinez under the bus, but said enough to let it be known there’s not much left in his tank.

“With a couple of plays there, he might not have given up as many runs,’’ Manuel said. “He could have gotten out of there with maybe three runs.’’

Fine, that’s a 3-2 loss.

Manuel said Martinez’s velocity was better, but it still isn’t where it should be.

“I think this is what he has,’’ Manuel said of Martinez’s stuff. “I think he’s able to pitch with what he has. I think his instincts are enough at the major league level where he can complete.’’

Maybe so, but that’s also if the defense is there and the offense produces something.

“With two runs in 18 innings, we wouldn’t be able to beat anybody,’’ Manuel said.

Boil it down and Manuel is saying everything has to be perfect for Martinez to win, and who’s comfortable with that?

Mets Chat Room, Game #1: What’s up with Pedro?

Mets vs. Phillies. Game two of three. Winning both would be great. Winning one is essential.

Pedro Martinez is going in the first game, and I’m concerned about him. He downplays velocity, but let’s face it, he’s not throwing exceptionally hard. Sooner or later, it has to be on his mind. Definitely, it has to be an issue.

With three weeks remaining, Martinez’s spot in the rotation will come up at least four more times, and the Mets aren’t in position to throw away four starts.

I really want to see what he has today.

About Last Night.

Well, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that if you don’t get any runs you’re not going to win. Nothing gets by be. You have to write it off as one of those things.

No game today, which gives Pedro Martinez an extra day of rest. It couldn’t hurt.

Frankly, I’m a little bit worried about Martinez. It’s just not there for him with his fastball. He says he doesn’t care about velocity, but if I can outrun the pitches to the plate there’s a problem.

Should the playoffs start tomorrow, would Martinez be in the rotation? Performance and his physical questions say no. His experience and the hope to lightning in a bottle says yes.

Sept. 5.08: Mets pregame notebook.

Jerry Manuel nuggets:

-So far, Pedro Martinez is a go for tomorrow. I wouldn’t go overboard on the over/under for his innings. Say 4 1/3.

-It looks as if the Mets could get left closer Billy Wagner back next week. Luis Ayala will get the ninth tonight. “We feel very good about his chances of coming back. I don’t think it will happen this weekend, but shortly after that he should be ready to go,” Manuel said today.

-Nothing new on John Maine. Forget the closer idea.

-Manuel on Dan Murphy playing second in the future: “I think Murphy’s a good baseball player. it would be not fair if we didn’t think he could do that, If you are a baseball player, and that’s what you do, you should be able to play any where on that field, except for maybe behind the plate.” You might recall several weeks ago when I spoke with GM Omar Minaya he left it open for Murphy to play first base in the Arizona Instructional League this fall.
