Mets Chat Room: Big Pelf on the hill

CHAT ROOM

CHAT ROOM

The Mets seek to open their season at 2-0 tonight behind Mike Pelfrey (1-1, 4.43 ERA in four games against the Reds). After a dismal 2-6 start last season, Pelfrey won 11 of his last 16 starts.

Don’t expect to see Gary Sheffield in the field any time soon. He said he needs to drop a few and isn’t ready. Manager Jerry Manuel said perhaps the last game of the Florida series or when the team returns home.

“There will be a point when we put him in the field,” Manuel said. “We’ll find a place for him.”

Until then, here’s tonight’s line-up:

Jose Reyes, SS
Daniel Murphy, LF
David Wright, 3B
Carlos Delgado, 1B
Carlos Beltran, CF
Ryan Church, RF
Brian Schneider, C
Luis Castillo, 2B
Mike Pelfrey, P

Are you concerned about Pelfrey?

Mike Pelfrey isn’t concerned about Mike Pelfrey, which is the most important thing. Early in their careers, when some pitchers reach a high in innings pitched, they hit a wall. Sometimes, it’s injury related. Other times performance driven.

Pelfrey doesn’t want to hear about injuries, especially the little, nagging kind. In that regard, I’ll take him at his word and expect him to pitch well tonight at Cincinnati.

Pelfrey is the Mets’ No. 2 starter, but by default. If John Maine and Oliver Perez were pitching to expectations, Pelfrey would be the No. 4 starter. Because Maine and Perez have issues, I don’t like the idea of throwing them back-to-back because of the potential toll on the bullpen.

I’ll have a Mets Chat Room tonight at 7:00 p.m., for Game #2, Mets at Reds. Hope you’ll join me.

Mets Chat Room: You’ll love the new place

Shea Stadium was home to the Mets for 45 seasons. It was dumpy, but “it is our dump,” Mets’ fans would say.

Citi Field is state of the art all the way. I like the spaciousness of the concourses, the variety of food options and the quirks that comprise the outfield dimensions. No cookie cutter is this place. In designing Citi Field, the Mets borrowed liberally from both the old and the new. You can see bits of Tiger Stadium and Ebbets Field, as well as Camden Yards and Jacobs Field.

Unlike the Ballpark in Arlington, which is like a suit with checks and plaids, there is a seamless quality about Citi Field. If fits. It looks right. It feels natural.

I’m just anxious to see how it plays.

I’m a little uneasy about this season, because for the first time I’ll be doing Mets Chat Room without the benefit of covering the Mets as a beat. It kills me at times not to be doing so.

But, I still have my Baseball Writers credential, so I have access to the park and will be trying to get down there as much as possible. It’s impossible to keep up the pace as in the past, but I will do my best to keep the blog going on limited resources. I’m doing so because you’ve stood by and read me during the offseason.

For that I’m grateful and I wish you all well, and more to the point, I wish you what you all want — the Mets in the Series.

Mets Chat Room: Wrapping up the Winter Meetings.

When we last left our heroes, did so with scathing words about their bullpen, which in the last four days has gone from arguably the worst to the best in baseball.

Adding Francisco Rodriguez and JJ Putz will do that to a bullpen.

We kick off Mets Chat Room with word they are talking to the Cubs about Jason Marquis.

Looking forward to talking with you tonight.
