METS CHAT ROOM: Game #81; Phillies go for sweep.

The Mets (39-41) close their three game series with the Phillies (41-37) today the way many of us though they would, by trying to avoid being swept. They have Johan Santana going for them, but that’s not the `get out of jail free card,’ it used to be.

Santana is 9-6 with a 3.34 ERA. He is coming off a bad start last Tuesday in Milwaukee in which he gave up five earned runs on nine hits in six innings. Since June 2, he is 2-3 with a 6.19 ERA. Very mortal numbers.

Today’s line-up vs. Phillies RP Joe Blanton (4-4, 5.08):

Alex Cora, SS

Daniel Murphy, 1B

David Wright, 3B

Ryan Church, RF

Nick Evans, LF

Jeremy Reed, CF

Brian Schneider, C

Luis Castillo, 2B

Johan Santana, LP

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #66; all eyes on Santana.

It will be very interesting to watch Johan Santana this afternoon. He really hasn’t been himself since the San Francisco game. He’s won, but he’s been vulnerable. After getting shelled by the Yankees last weekend, Santana insisted nothing is wrong physically.

He and pitching coach Dan Warthen worked on mechanics this week, and everybody us saying he’s fine. He goes into today’s game against the Rays with an extra day of rest. If his velocity is off again today with the extra rest, there might be some cause for alarm.

The Mets are sure to watch him closely and give him a short leash.

Here’s today’s line-up:

Alex Cora, SS
Daniel Murphy, 1B
Carlos Beltran, CF
David Wright, 3B
Ryan Church, RF
Jeremy Reed, LF
Omir Santos, C
Luis Castillo, 2B
Johan Santana, LP

Last night was as brutal a loss as they come. Maybe the Ryan Church game in LA was worse. It was the kind of game that could kick off a losing streak.

Fortunately for the Mets, they have Johan Santana (7-2, 1.77 ERA) going for them. Santana is coming off a season-high six-walk performance, but with 11 strikeouts in a win over Washington.

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Luis Castillo, 2B
Fernando Martinez, LF
David Wright, 3B
Gary Sheffield, RF
Fernando Tatis, 1B
Omir Santos, C
Ramon Martinez, SS
Jeremy Reed, CF
Johan Santana, P

It’s one thing to lose ….

…. but it is another to give away a game like the Mets did last night. Inexcusable. If Jerry Manuel didn’t read them the riot act then he’s not doing his job as manager.

How in the hell do you miss third base? All those missed opportunities …. they could have won the game three times over. It’s one thing to blow a good pitching performance from Johan Santana. I’m used to that. It’s another to blow one from Tim Redding. When will they get another one?

In the original post I said the Mets’ weaknesses would be exposed during the rest of this road trip. Well, some got exposed last night.

Ryan Church got a couple of hits. Maybe he’s showing signs. But, the baserunning was unforgivable.

Jeremy Reed, of course, is not the answer at first base. I don’t know who is, but why not give Daniel Murphy a shot. He can’t do any worse.

All teams have stinkers, but last night was maddening because we’ve seen it all too often from the Mets where it all unravels.

And, the pitching match-ups for the rest of this series favors the Dodgers. Then they go to Boston. They are on the verge of giving back all they’ve accomplished the past 10 days.

When this series started Thursday I never imagined the Mets would be going for the sweep tonight. Never. But, they have played well in this series, and yesterday finally gave Johan Santana the run support he needed.

Mike Pelfrey looks to go 5-0 tonight, but it won’t be easy against Matt Cain. Also, Jose Reyes is out of the the line-up for the fourth straight game.

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Alex Cora, SS
Luis Castillo, 2B
Carlos Beltran, CF
Gary Sheffield, RF
David Wright, 3B
Daniel Murphy, LF
Omir Santos, C
Jeremy Reed, 1B
Mike Pelfrey, P

Notes:

* Jose Reyes will miss his fourth straight game with tendinitis in his calf.
