May 23.10: Maine admits to arm problems; Manuel vindicated.

Is it lying or semantics?

Pitching coach Dan Warthen called John Maine a “habitual liar,’’ two words that could destroy most any working relationship. It remains to be seen whether it will ruin this one, even though Warthen and manager Jerry Manuel have been vindicated for pulling Maine after five pitches last week in Washington.

Warthen’s intent was innocent enough although his choice of words was poor. Warthen meant it in that Maine never admits to his arm feeling poorly.

Even now, when Maine finally admitted something is not right with his shoulder he couched his words.

“There’s a little bit of pain, but what pitcher doesn’t have pain?’’ Maine said. “It’s the nature of pitching. It wasn’t going to stop me from going out there every five days.’’

But, it isn’t pain as much as it is weakness or fatigue in the shoulder.

“There was a little bit of weakness, not that much,’’ Maine said. “I guess they want to get to the bottom of it. What’s the problem, you know? What’s going on back there?

“Something has got to be found, but if everything comes back good, then I’ll deal with it and pitch, if I have to.’’

In the interim, the Mets must improvise.

The current thinking is to use Raul Valdes, who replaced Maine after his five pitch-outing, against the Phillies Tuesday night, followed Hisanori Takahashi and Mike Pelfrey. The thinking of Valdes over R.A. Dickey is because of the left-handed power in the Phillies’ line-up.

The next time Maine’s turn in the rotation would be is a week from today. But, the Mets will jump off that bridge when they get to it.

Feb. 8.10: Let’s not get carried away.

The Mets got some positive news when 21–year-old outfield prospect Fernando Martinez was named MVP of the Caribbean Series. They should, however, resist the temptation to say he’s ready because it was a 23-at-bat sampling in which he hit .348 with two home runs. The Mets have rushed prospects before and I don’t want to see them toy with Martinez’s confidence.

Assuming the best on Carlos Beltran, I’m sure center field will be safe with Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr., in the interim, which should be a couple of months. Martinez wouldn’t get regular at-bats and would only be sent down once Beltran is ready.

I’m still thinking the prudent decision would be for him to get regular playing time in Triple-A and then make an evaluation around the All-Star break whether he should be promoted for the second half.

Gooood morning with a season-ticket update ….

Have a good day.

Have a good day.

Very crowded last night in Mets Chat Room. Just the way I like it. For those who joined us for the first time, I hope you had a good time and will be back.

More of the same for me today. Back to the library with the laptop.

I checked in with the Mets this morning about season tickets, and there’s partial plans haven’t been determined yet. I’ll keep an eye on it for you.

In the interim, if you have any questions for the Mets you aren’t getting answered, forward them to me and I’ll make the calls.

Manuel announced: Pledges different mindset.

The interim label is off Jerry Manuel. The team announced he was signed to a two-year deal with an option for a third year.

Among the highlights of the conference call:

-In addition to the bullpen, Manuel said the offense needs a different mindset, with a concentration on fundamentals and situational hitting. “We have to place a value on getting a walk,” Manuel said. “We have to place a value on hitting a ground ball to advance a runner.”

-On the bullpen, he said: “Our dilemma is it is difficult to evaluate people not in roles they are accustomed to.”

-Manuel said no decisions have been made on his coaching staff.

More to follow.

About Last Night ….

CHAT ROOM

CHAT ROOM

Last night was a spur of the moment decision. My thinking was I had to let you guys know I wouldn’t disappear in the offseason, so I got the idea of the Chat Room. I was thrilled with the outcome.

The question is how often should I do this in the off-season and when is the best time?

I’ll need your help on that and what else you’d like to see in the off-season. Please let me know what you’re thinking.

In the interim, please check in regularly for what’s going on with your Mets.
