Home again ….

Has been an eventful few days. Hope you all enjoyed your Christmas and are bracing for the New Year. Just pulled in from visiting my family in Ohio. Decided to drive. Yup. That was a mistake. Should have sucked it up and gone with the flight. But, not working full time has me thinking about saving the bucks.

Lousy weather before the trip has leaks coming in later. Buckets all over the place. Gift card from Home Depot came in handy.

Have been busy which explains the lull in posting the past week. But, there’s been a lull with the Mets, too.

Last I checked, they were hot after Derek Lowe. Their fourth starter priorities are Lowe, Oliver Perez and Randy Wolf. I thought Lowe would end up back with the Red Sox. Didn’t think the Mets would go that hard for him, but they are tired of Perez’s inconsistency.

It’s so, the Mets are after Lowe ….

I don’t believe the Mets would make a player decision simply in response to something the Yankees did. They know they need pitching, which, despite speculation he was headed to Boston, the Mets pressed hard for Derek Lowe.

Word is they are deep in negotiations, with the numbers three years for around $13 million a season. Could be a little steep, but considering his durability and reliability, it might not be such a bad deal afterall.

Definitely, less risky than say giving that money to Oliver Perez. A rotation of Johan Santana, Lowe, Mike Pelfrey and John Maine is solid to the point of being one of the best in the National League. And, if you match them up, it is as good as what the Yankees put together this winter.

Mets to talk with Pedro ….

MARTINEZ: Wants another year with the Mets.

The Mets’ rotation could again include Pedro Martinez, who wants to return and GM Omar Minaya has a reciprocal interest in bringing him back.

Said Minaya to ESPN.deportes: “We have interest in him. We’re going to talk to his agent when we have the opportunity.”

The Mets have three starters – Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey and John Maine – but with their odds long on getting Derek Lowe, they might have to settle for bringing back Oliver Perez, and that’s not a given.

Jon Niese would be expected to compete with Martinez for the fifth spot in the rotation.

Mets Chat Room: Winter Meetings on deck.

CHAT ROOM

There have been years the Mets did most of their heavy lifting before the Winter Meetings. This isn’t one of them. We’ve been hearing since the end of the season that they’re going back-and-forth on Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes.

One closer won’t do it.

The starter we’ve been hearing the most about is Derek Lowe, but he will cost more than what they expected.

They will keep Carlos Delgado, so let’s forget about that. Left-field, for now, is a platoon of Daniel Murphy and Fernando Tatis. I suppose you don’t want to hear this, but second base is going to be Luis Castillo. I know, I know ….

On the Table: One more year for Pedro?

MARTINEZ: Wants one more year with Mets.

MARTINEZ: Wants one more year with Mets.

Bringing back Pedro Martinez for a year was a topic last night in Mets Chat Room, and his agent, Fern Cuza, said the future Hall of Famer wants another season with the Mets.

No surprise there.

“I can still pitch,’’ Martinez told me the morning of the season finale. “This hasn’t been a normal year for me.’’

With injuries and time off because of the death of his father, Martinez started and stopped several times last season. He was never in cync.

Assuming his health, where would Martinez fit?

Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey and John Maine are ahead of him. Jon Niese will compete for the fifth spot, and the fourth spot in the rotation is uncertain. The Mets are looking at Derek Lowe and bringing back Oliver Perez for the fourth spot.

Martinez is no more than a fifth starter these days. He went at least six innings in half his 20 starts, and only twice pitched seven innings.

If healthy, perhaps he would have won 10 games instead of five. Who can say? Should the Mets give Martinez one more year or roll the dice with Niese?
