You have to like how this road trip began. With the springboard of losing two of three to Atlanta, the Mets have responded with two thrilling victories at San Francisco, including last night’s rally from a four-run deficit.

Today we have Johan Santana against Randy Johnson, easily the day’s marquee pitching match-up.

We begin with the news Carlos Delgado was placed on the DL with an impingement of his right hip. Replacing him on the roster is Angel Pagan.

Mets Medical News

Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters on a conference call today a MRI revealed J.J. Putz has inflammation in the back of his elbow. Putz will meet the team in San Francisco but is expected to miss the first couple of games in the Giants series.

Minaya also said the team will wait until this weekend to whether Carlos Delgado goes on the disabled list. Delgado is receiving treatment and medication for a bone spur in his right hip.

Tonight’s line-up vs. Pittsburgh

Here’s tonight’s line-up vs. Pittsburgh:

Jose Reyes, SS
Luis Castillo, 2B
Carlos Beltran, CF
Carlos Delgado, 1B
David Wright, 3B
Daniel Murphy, LF
Omir Santos, C
Ryan Church, RF
Jon Niese, P

I like that Castillo is hitting second and Murphy is batting sixth. I hope it stays that way.

Truth be told, I had the Mets at 2-3 on this trip. That they could go 3-1 with a win tonight behind Livan Hernandez is a step forward. The Mets worked Daniel Murphy out at first base this afternoon, indication they are preparing for life without Carlos Delgado.

Delgado will start tonight at first with Murphy in left.

A good sign last night was David Wright continuing to show breakout signs.

There’s always news of some kind when the Mets are in Atlanta. Last year, for example, marked the beginning of the end for Willie Randolph and was also the site of Ryan Church’s concussion.

Word is Oliver Perez will be demoted to the bullpen, with the team eschewing the minor league and DL options.

Oh yes, Carlos Delgado returns tonight.
