Mets Chat Room; K-Rod done for year.

Game #118 at Astros

The homestand that was supposed to be their last chance has ended in mediocrity, and now it is on to Houston and Pittsburgh, two teams with offenses even worse than the Mets.

The road trip begins with the news Francisco Rodriguez could be lost for the season after tearing a ligament in his right thumb sustained in the altercation with the father of his girlfriend. Then again, what good is a closer if you’re not scoring any runs.

The offense is hitting less than .200 in August, and the slide is personified by David Wright, who is batting .114 with no RBI in August.

Jon Niese, one of the positives of this season, goes for the Mets tonight.

What do you know, it can get worse.

Today I posted some of the silver threads in the dark cloud that has become the Mets’ season. It got even worse today with the news Francisco Rodriguez has a torn ligament in his right thumb, sustained, of course, in the altercation the other night.

Rodriguez underwent an MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery  and surgery has been recommended.

Rodriguez has a $17.5 million option for 2012 which automatically vests if he finishes 55 games in 2011 AND he finishes 100 games between 2010 and 2011. That might not happen now.

More to the point, the Mets might find cause to terminate his contract based on Rodriguez’s actions making him unavailable to pitch. Don’t think for a moment the Mets aren’t examining that possibility. They’d love to unload his contract and this could be the opportunity.

K-Rod held overnight following fight

Only the Mets.

Francisco Rodriguez was held overnight in a detainment center in Citi Field after being charged with third-degree assault following an altercation with in father-in-law after Wednesday night’s loss to Colorado.

He will be arraigned Thursday morning at Queens Criminal Court.

This isn’t the first time Rodriguez’s temper got the best of him. Earlier this season he and bullpen coach Randy Niemann were involved in a shoving match, and last year he got in a shouting match with Tony Bernazard.

Rodriguez has always been an emotional type, the Mets knew this going in. It’s what fuels him on the mound, but gets him in trouble off it.

It’s questionable Rodriguez will be available this afternoon.
