The best pitcher in the sport will try to extend the Mets’ winning streak to three games tonight against the Phillies. Johan Santana could easily be 5-0 with a little more support.

Interesting changes in the line-up, beginning with Daniel Murphy batting sixth behind David Wright because Alex Cora gets the start at second. Ryan Church, who is in a dreadful slump and hitting .143 with RISP in on the bench.

Here’s the line-up:

Jose Reyes, SS
Alex Cora, 2B
Carlos Beltran, CF
Carlos Delgado, 1B
David Wright, 3B
Daniel Murphy, LF
Jeremy Reed, RF
Omir Santos, C
Johan Santana, P

METS CHAT ROOM: Game #22; Trying to get on track.

The sluggish Mets will try to get things going tonight at Philly, with Mike Pelfrey going against Chan Ho Park. Pelfrey (2-0, 6.32 ERA) is 1-2 in four career starts against the Phillies. He is coming off a good start – two runs in 5 2/3 innings against the Nationals.

PELFREY: Mets need good start to get rolling.

PELFREY: Mets need good start to get rolling.

However, the Phillies aren’t the Nationals.

Even though they aren’t playing well, the Mets are talking about the match-up with the Phillies as a good thing, saying the NL East confrontation could give them a spark. That’s disconcerting to me because if they need a rivarly to get them going there’s something lacking.

Carlos Delgado (hip) and Luis Castillo (back) are out of the line-up, an indication their injuries are more serious than originally speculated. Manager Jerry Manuel even suggested the DL a possibility for Delgado.

Here’s the line-up:

Jose Reyes, SS
Alex Cora, 2B
Daniel Murphy, LF
Carlos Beltran, CF
David Wright, 3B
Ryan Church, RF
Fernando Tatis, 1B

Mike Pelfrey, P

Carlos Delgado will sit out tonight’s game against Florida with a sore hip, and Jerry Manuel said he’ll sit tomorrow, also. It’s obvious he wants him fresh for this weekend in Philly.

Also sitting will be second baseman Luis Castillo with back spasms. No word on if he’ll play tomorrow.

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Jose Reyes, SS
Alex Cora, 2B
Carlos Beltran, CF
Gary Sheffield, LF
David Wright, 3B
Ryan Church, RF

Figuring the roster

Marlon Anderson has a contract. Nick Evans has options. The final roster spot could come down to these two.

Anderson didn’t produce last year, but has in the past as a pinch-hitter. The Mets already have a second base backup in Alex Cora, so Anderson is really redundant.

Evans gives the Mets some right-handed power and has played better this spring. He’s also not the defensive liability some people think. Plus he gives the Mets a better first-base back-up option.

Should the Mets take the past of least resistance and option Evans to keep Anderson or will they refuse to eat the latter’s contract?
