An arrest warrant was issued Friday in the Dominican Republic for Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos on charges stemming from a hit-and-run accident that killed two women.
“We recommend that Mr. Burgos turn himself in so we can start the judicial process,” Prosecutor Raul Quiroz said.
Burgos’ SUV struck Josefina Minaya Martinez, 38, and Angely Fana, 29, Tuesday in the town of Nagua, and both died at a hospital. Witnesses placed Burgos behind the wheel, but his cousin Edwin Silvestre Sanchez claimed to be driving. Sanchez was released from police custody Friday.
Quiroz said Burgos had recently been arrested on a charge of illegal weapon possession and released. Burgos was also arrested last month in New York on assault and harassment charges.
The interim label is off Jerry Manuel. The team announced he was signed to a two-year deal with an option for a third year.
Among the highlights of the conference call:
-In addition to the bullpen, Manuel said the offense needs a different mindset, with a concentration on fundamentals and situational hitting. “We have to place a value on getting a walk,” Manuel said. “We have to place a value on hitting a ground ball to advance a runner.”
-On the bullpen, he said: “Our dilemma is it is difficult to evaluate people not in roles they are accustomed to.”
-Manuel said no decisions have been made on his coaching staff.
I didn’t buy the Red Sox having a curse, and I don’t buy it with the Cubs, either. The Cubs are down 2-0 to the Dodgers not because of bad luck, but because they’ve been pounded. It’s amusing to watch the forlorn expressions on the faces of Cubs’ fans. It’s almost as if they relish in the misery.
What would they do if they ever won? Probably win again, just like the Red Sox did.
I’m watching the Rays-Sox. Tampa Bay losing in the second and Scott Kazmir is struggling. The Rays are the best story of the playoffs, but you can bet the networks hope it will be Boston and the Cubs. Two storied franchises playing in antique stadiums. They are salivating over the potential ratings already.
