Should they add Fuentes, too?

FUENTES: Could he still be in play?

FUENTES: Could he still be in play?

OK, you’re the Mets and you’ve landed the top reliever in the market, Francisco Rodriguez. Pending a physical, of course. So, do you also make a FA play for Brian Fuentes or make a trade for Huston Street?

Considering they first courted him as a closer, the Mets might have to offer more money if they want to Fuentes to take a lesser role. Street, of course, would have to come in a trade for prospects.

They have a deal ….

The Mets reached agreement with closer Francisco Rodriguez on a three-year, $37 million deal, pending a physical. The deal includes a $14 million vesting option for a fourth year that would raise the total value of the contract to $51 million.

The option is based on innings pitched, which means he has to be healthy to get the year, and consequently, his money.

Bullpen notes ….

Bullpen bits:

-Free-agent reliever Chad Cordero will meet with the Mets about a set-up/situational role. Cordero is coming off shoulder surgery so there is trepidation.

-Houston GM Ed Wade to ESPN.com: “I don’t like to talk publicly about potential trades, but I can assure that (Jose) Valverde is not being traded.’’

-The Mets do not have a meeting scheduled with Kerry Wood.

-The Mets have talked to Brian Fuentes and have mentioned money. However, there has not been an offer.

Closing in on K-Rod ….

K-ROD: Will he celebrate soon?

K-ROD: Will he celebrate soon?

The Mets are getting closer to getting a deal done with soon-to-be former Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez. The numbers are being reported at $37 million over three years, which is a far cry from the original asking price of $75 million over five years.

I’m guessing the agent’s thinking could be to take the three years in this rotten economy because Rodriguez will be young enough at the end of the contract (27 now) for another huge pay day.

You know things are heating up when the player talks. Here’s what Rodriguez told the LA Times: “I don’t want to say much about it. But it’s going well with them. Everything is going OK, so we’ll see what’s going to happen.”

Mets make K-Rod offer ….

Talkin' money with K-Rod

Talkin' money with K-Rod

K-Rod’s initial asking price was $75-million over five years, and the Mets’ responded today with three years at $40 million, a considerable gap.

The Mets also plan on meeting with free-agent closers Brian Fuentes and Trevor Hoffman today. There is also a chance they’ll meet with Kerry Wood, too.

Reports also have the Mets talking trade with Seattle for J.J. Putz, Houston for Jose Valverde, the White Sox for Bobby Jenks and Toronto for B.J. Ryan.

“In the next four days, we will probably be more aggressive with dialogue with agents,” GM Omar Minaya said. “And at the same time, we have some potential trades that are out there that we might be able to get done.”

Meanwhile, the Mark Healey from Gotham Sports is reporting the Yankees are talking trade with Robinson Cano to the Dodgers for Matt Kemp.
