Zack Wheeler Among Roster Cuts; Mets Lineup Against Cardinals

Zack Wheeler was one of the ten the Mets re-assigned to the minor league camp this morning.

In addition to Wheeler, also sent down were: Collin McHugh, Gonzalez Germen, Darin Gorski, Elvin Ramirez, Wilfredo Tovar, Hansel Robles, Juan Lagares, Cesar Puello and Reese Havens.

WHEELER: Sent down today.

WHEELER: Sent down today.

The highly-touted prospect acquired from San Francisco for Carlos Beltran two years ago expressed disappointment, but not surprise at the demotion. After all, GM Sandy Alderson has said several times Wheeler would not be rushed.

“I expected it,’’ said Wheeler. “They told me this at the start of spring training.’’

Wheeler, who has been sidelined with a strained oblique, threw off the mound this morning at Port St. Lucie.

Pitching coach Dan Warthen spoke with Wheeler this morning to offer some homework advice.

“I told him to work on his secondary pitches and fastball command on both sides of the plate,’’ Warthen said.

Here’s today’s lineup against the Cardinals:

Marlon Byrd, rf

Justin Turner, 2b

Collin Cowgill, cf

Lucas Duda, dh

Andrew Brown, lf

Brandon Hicks, 3b

Zach Lutz, 1b

Landon Powell, c

Omar Quintanilla, ss

Shaun Marcum, rhp

  1. C’mon guys! You are a Mets specialty web site that says in the marquee “analysis” … so analyze. Don’t just regurgitate somebody else’s news.

You are the expert. Go a step further … does this mean that McHugh, Wheeler, Germen, Gorski and Robles are the AAA rotation? Concerns about Robles jumping from A ball? Elvin Ramirez to be the long man? Set-up man? Havens and Tovar to be the AAA starting middle infield? Where does Satin fit into the picture?

Has Mejia’s chances improved now to make the Mets big league team? C’mon guys. It took me five seconds to come out with those questions. Don’t be lazy. Make your site better than everyone else’s!

    • John: I’m working on it. Not regurgitating anything as I am down here in Florida. The later post on Wheeler shows more analysis. This one was to just get the news out quickly. I’m trying to do two things. I do like your comment and you’ll see more analysis and commentary. Thanks so much.-JD

    • Isn’t it a bit early to be stating who will be in the pen?

Or that Havens will actually play this year rather than be on the DL team?

      • While you make nice questions, it is a bit early to analyze these players. How many games has Jenrry been in? Who will be the outfield. They just started pushing off the minor league guys.

We will find out in a few weeks how the team stacks up. I have looked at a few other sites in the past few years with passionate views on players. It doesn’t make them right, but they are passionate in their views and often disparaging of others.
