METS CHAT ROOM: Game #118; Livan stays in rotation.

The core is gone, maybe never to return this season. With the Mets well below .500 and expectations of this year faded to bitter memories, there’s really no reason to rush David Wright’s return, or that of Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado.

Yes, there are reasons to see them, but none of the compelling team variety. The only one I can see them getting something for is Delgado in a waiver trade, but let’s face it, he’s not coming back.

The 55-62 Mets have played much of the year without Beltran, Delgado and Reyes, so watching Wright take a Matt Cain fastball in the earflap was especially difficult.

“He’s in our thoughts and our prayers,’’ Daniel Murphy said. “He’s the leader of this ball club.”

LIVAN: Stays in rotation.

LIVAN: Stays in rotation.

Livan Hernandez (7-7, 5.28) goes to the mound tonight against the Giants’ Joe Martinez (2-1, 6.00). Hernandez will try to rebound for his last two starts in which he gave up 12 runs on 15 hits and seven walks.

Manuel could have opted with Tim Redding or Nelson Figueroa, but stuck with Hernandez.

“Just looking back at everything, there’s been times where he’s had a couple bad outings and then he’s bounced right back,” Manuel said. “Hopefully we can get that from him now on the rest of the way.’’

Here’s tonight’s line-up:

Cory Sullivan, CF
Luis Castillo, 2B
Gary Sheffield, LF
Daniel Murphy, 1B
Jeff Francoeur, RF
Fernando Tatis, 3B
Brian Schneider, C
Anderson Hernandez, SS
Livan Hernandez, RP

NOTEBOOK: Only three players, Murphy, Schneider and Castillo from the Opening Day batting order. … Lefty reliever Pedro Feliciano has not allowed an earned run in 14 of his past 15 appearances. … The Mets are 16-16 in one-run games, fitting for a team below .500. … Giants catcher Bengie Molina is expected to return to the lineup after Eli Whiteside replaced him Sunday. Molina, who hit the game-winning homer Saturday, is 8 for 17 with three homers lifetime versus Hernandez. … Alex Cora is still having some issues with his hand.

  1. Wright said he was embarrassed to go on the disabled list, admitting he wanted to stay off it his entire thought. Noble thought, but there should never be any chances taken with the head.-JD

  2. I hope D-Wright comes to his senses and just calls it a year. Head trauma is serious.
Just rest, recuperate and get ready for spring training.
He has nothing to prove to anyone about his toughness, willingness to play through pain, or being a gamer.
Coming back to play meaningless games in this year from hell makes no sense.

  3. Gil (2), John (3) I guess I overestimated him – thought he would want to take care of himself…

  4. 2. Hey traitor Gil… I’ll send you buck so you can enjoy another porno flick in downtown Orlando and keep the hell away from good Americans who just want to enjoy baseball without insults from traitorous leppers such as you.

  5. Harry (6): Greetings to you. I know you and Gil don’t agree on things, but remember this, the ultimate display of freedom of speech is for you to defend you enemies’ right to express an opinion no matter how opposite it is of yours.-JD

  6. So nice to hear Howie and Wayne again – over the weekend although I had FOX and WPIX the FOX guys??? were awful and WPIX had Gary and Keith, no Ron. I also didn’t have my computer working – Brian spent hours fixing what I had screwed up. However, I did watch the whole 4 days of the PGA where Tiger got worse every day instead of better. No wonder he lost.

  7. Howie and Wayne are talking about David – one of his brothers and his parents were in the ballpark when all this happened. I didn’t know that.

  8. Three straight bad outings from Livan Hernandez. If they are to get something from him in a waiver deal they’d better work some magic because the scouting reports aren’t good.-JD

  9. John (12) I’ve been listening from the back yard where it is cool and quiet. I know the game isn’t going well, but it seems appropriate for a summer night…

  10. Howie has put this mixed up game ‘in the Books’ SF just ran away with it.

    Final Score: SF9-NY1

Next Game: Tomorrow at 7:10PM, Atlanta

    See you then.

  11. Its time to cut the cord with Livan. That should even be obvious to Manuel now. Dessens might even be a better option at this point.

  12. Now, Howie has put this game ‘in the books’ and SF added a run in the last inning.

    Final Score: SF 10 – NY 1

Next Game tomorrow night 7:10PM – Atlanta

    See you then.

  13. I’ve been preoccupied most of the past week and hadn’t even had a chance to see or hear most of the games, which was probably a blessing. Didn’t even know about Wright getting hit until I caught it on the news that night. The most unsettling thing to me was seeing Jeff Francouer being interviewed like he was suddenly the team spokesman, and acting like he and Wright had been teammates for years!

Hard to accept that 40 years after the Miracle Mets, and with a brand new stadium, this is the kind of year we have.

  14. So was it two weeks ago that I said Livan Hernandez has done the job as a fifth starter and I wouldn’t mind if he came back in that role in 2010? Since then he’s gone out and given up 18 runs in 14.1 innings and made me look stupider than Steve Phillips.

  15. Jeff (22)Dan (23) I spent most of the weekend with the PGA, but did see David get hit – what surprised me the most was that David fought against the DL – doesn’t he remember what Church went through just last year?
Dan, No one looks and acts stupider than Steve Phillips.
