METS CHAT ROOM: Game #106; Pitcher’s duel.

We start off tonight with disturbing news, that Jose Reyes returned to New York to be re-examined by doctors.

This isn’t just a tight calf anymore. Hell, it hasn’t been a tight calf for two months.

I wrote this several weeks ago and it bears repeating, but the Mets should consider shutting down Reyes for the remainder of the season.

If they full further out of the race, the only thing that could be accomplished by playing Reyes is to showcase him for an off-season trade.

Other than that, what could be gained?

The Mets are home tonight to start a two-game series with St. Louis. Joel Pineiro (9-9, 2.84), who shut out the Mets earlier this year on a two-hitter, goes against Johan Santana (12-8, 2.96). Santana is 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA in his last three starts in Citi Field.

Lifetime, Pineiro is 3-0 with a 2.91 ERA in five starts against the Mets.

Here’s the line-up:

Angel Pagan, CF
Luis Castillo, 2B
David Wright, 3B
Gary Sheffield, LF
Daniel Murphy, 1B
Jeff Francoeur, RF
Alex Cora, SS
Omir Santos, C
Johan Santana, LP

NOTEBOOK: Carlos Delgado is doing some light running. … Nelson Figueroa is available tonight in the bullpen.

  2. Annie Savoy August 4, 2009 7:14 pm

1,2,3 and Santana has a seven pitch inning.

  3. John Delcos August 4, 2009 7:15 pm

  5. dave August 4, 2009 7:19 pm

so murph is protection for sheff?

  6. dave August 4, 2009 7:20 pm

    shut him down.

if he has new concerns what is the point?

do they want to cripple their core?

  7. dave August 4, 2009 7:20 pm

i would let beltran heal also.

  8. dave August 4, 2009 7:20 pm

so david gets a hit. good for him.

  9. John Delcos August 4, 2009 7:21 pm

Angel Pagan isn’t quite Lou Brock on the bases.-JD

  10. John Delcos August 4, 2009 7:22 pm

Pagan should have scored. They’ll need that run later.-JD

  14. dave August 4, 2009 7:31 pm

as i said this weekend i think, or was it last week. they need to win 2 of every 3 games to have any shot.

this team is just not good enough.

the season is done. they may make a run and win say 85 games or so. but is that good enough to get a wildcard?

they certainly are not good enough to beat our friends in PA.

I read an article recently where Met season tkt holders are losing big money trying to sell tkts they cant use.

I wonder how many people will decline to buy next year. the subscription price is a killer. cant remember what they charged just for the opportunity to buy tkts. or is that a different sport?

  15. dave August 4, 2009 7:33 pm

    john(13) yeah. i know.

i just did not see what prevented him from going home. bad jump? slow to third? he certainly is fast enough.

shines sends most players home anyway. whether they can make it or not.

  16. John Delcos August 4, 2009 7:37 pm

    dave (15): Poor jump.-JD

  17. dave August 4, 2009 7:39 pm

    wow

    dbl for a pitcher

  18. John Delcos August 4, 2009 7:39 pm

He’s got to do it by himself.-JD

  19. dave August 4, 2009 7:40 pm

    aint that the truth

    16

    thanks

  21. Annie Savoy August 4, 2009 7:41 pm

John – Where would this team be without Santana – seems to me he can do anything and everything.

  22. dave August 4, 2009 7:42 pm

without santana they would be sellers.

    they should have anyway.

  23. Annie Savoy August 4, 2009 7:45 pm

dave (22) I think you’re right – but it’s not just the players who are vulnerable – the whole team management needs a shake up – and, what about the medical/trainers? Hasn’t Jose Reyes had leg problems since the beginning?

  24. John Delcos August 4, 2009 7:49 pm

Annie (23): Everything should be re-evaluated in the offseason.-JD

  25. Annie Savoy August 4, 2009 7:50 pm

OT – History is being made on CSPAN-2 where the Senators are giving speeches for/against Judge Sotomayor. She’s already got the votes for confirmation, but they all need to go on record.

  26. Annie Savoy August 4, 2009 7:53 pm

John (24) and the off season will be early this year. Interesting, after I heard Jeff Wilpon speak about his family and the team last week, I’ve changed my mind about him….

  27. John Delcos August 4, 2009 8:02 pm

Pagan misjudged that ball in center. It hit the wall on the fly. It could have been caught.-JD

  28. dave August 4, 2009 8:02 pm

23 i was saying that a few weeks ago

  29. dave August 4, 2009 8:03 pm

    annie

yeah i heard a clip of that too. i think omar is done.

it was him, the org, his father and his uncle.

  30. dave August 4, 2009 8:04 pm

    well.

    no pitchers duel i guess.

  31. John Delcos August 4, 2009 8:05 pm

    dave (30): Guess not.-JD

  32. Annie Savoy August 4, 2009 8:09 pm

dave (29) I think I saw that, isn’t the Uncle (named Katz) The President of the Mets?

  33. dave August 4, 2009 8:14 pm

not sure. first i heard of an uncle that had any influence. even though it was convesational, it does not sound good for those currently employed as gm.

  34. abbey August 4, 2009 8:14 pm

Are the boys cheating with their beard agreement?

  35. Jeff M. August 4, 2009 8:16 pm

Another depressing night at Chintzi Field. Too bad there’s nothing else on until 9.

  36. dave August 4, 2009 8:18 pm

you must be right. there should be several mountain men out there by now.

  37. dave August 4, 2009 8:18 pm

    what is on @ 9?

  38. John Delcos August 4, 2009 8:26 pm

dave (36): Wouldn’t mind watching Jeremiah Johnson, since you’re talking about mountain men.-JD

  39. John Delcos August 4, 2009 8:28 pm

I still see Omar getting a pass because of the injuries and for the team not wanting to pay him three years to do nothing.-JD

  40. John Delcos August 4, 2009 8:32 pm

abbey (34): Any time the Mets start playing around with their hair it backfires. I would try hitting and pitching.-JD

  41. John Delcos August 4, 2009 8:33 pm

Jeff (35): What is on at 9?-JD

  42. Jeff M. August 4, 2009 8:39 pm

Hey, this is fun in spite of itself!

I’m planning to watch Warehouse 13 on SyFy at 9. It’s basically the same show as Fringe, which is basically the same show as The X Files.

But this little exercise has become nearly compelling.

  43. Annie Savoy August 4, 2009 8:40 pm

John (41) Don’t know, but this game is getting interesting….

  44. abbey August 4, 2009 9:12 pm

you’ve gotta be kidding me about castillo… falling down the stairs? so sad, i hope he comes back.

  45. John Delcos August 4, 2009 9:14 pm

Mets lost Castillo when he fell down the dugout steps. Somehow, that’s fitting.-JD

  46. John Delcos August 4, 2009 9:34 pm

K-Rod is not always easy on the eyes.-JD

  47. John Delcos August 4, 2009 9:36 pm

    He should be bunting.-JD

  48. rmkmets August 4, 2009 9:54 pm

Each game, Angel Berroa does more and more to show why he doesn’t even belong in A ball let alone the big leagues. He is one of the worst players I have ever seen. He seriously does nothing well. He can’t hit, he can’t field, he is the definition of SUCK.

This guy MUST have been on some PED to have won ROY. Either that or all the other rookies sucked that much.

  49. rmkmets August 4, 2009 10:03 pm

Closers are like baseballs version of kickers in football. They come in at the end of a game with their sole role being to lock down a hard earned win and just like that they can F the whole thing up and demoralize their team.

Hard to be mad at K-Rod b/c he’s been reliable for the most part this year, but I don’t care – this is a BAD job by him and he deserves to be knocked. He’s paid to lock down these sort of games and I think this is the 2nd time he’s blown a Santana win.

If I’m Johan, I demand a trade of this crap team. This guy (as much as he was off this game) desrved this win. Even though he didn’t necessarily have it on the mound, he did it at the plate and played some great defense. It’s a shame that he’s saddled with a dumb manager, a dumb GM, and surrounded by mentally weak and overrated players.

  50. Jeff M. August 4, 2009 10:07 pm

I’m back from Warehouse 13, and I see it’s now your typical 7-7 pitcher’s duel.

  51. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:19 pm

rmfkmets (49): Santana should have at least 15 wins by now. Should’ve won 20 last year.-JD

  52. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:22 pm

It’s like watching a car wreck in slow motion.-JD

  53. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:24 pm

Quick poll: Gasoline or water on the fire?-JD

  54. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:26 pm

OK … now I had a lot of scenarios in my mind. That wasn’t one of them.-JD

  55. Jeff M. August 4, 2009 10:27 pm

    Green = Gasoline

  56. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:27 pm

It looks as if Albert is out of his slump.-JD

  57. Jeff M. August 4, 2009 10:28 pm

Am I still watching the SyFy channel?

  58. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:28 pm

Yes you. You have lost control of your television set. What you are seeing is not real.-JD

  59. Jeff M. August 4, 2009 10:29 pm

They used to call it SciFi, now it’s SyFy. This, however, is the Sigh Fi channel.

  60. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:29 pm

    Well, yes it is.-JD

  61. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:29 pm

That wasn’t just gasoline. It was high test.-JD

  62. Jeff M. August 4, 2009 10:30 pm

Sounds like the fans at Chintzi are starting to boo. How rude!

  63. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:33 pm

jeff (62): What do you expect?-JD

  64. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:34 pm

The Mets will be out of town soon enough. When they return they could be 15 games.-JD

  65. Jeff M. August 4, 2009 10:34 pm

I expect flaming torches, at the very least. Booing? Feh.

  66. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:35 pm

The way things turned out, I’m glad Minaya didn’t make a panic move at the deadline.-JD

  67. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:35 pm

Jeff (65): You want to sacrifice the Mets into a live volcano?-JD

  68. John Delcos August 4, 2009 10:40 pm

Another that falls into the heartbreak category. You can’t throw away a two-run lead in the ninth with your closer. Six games under .500. Those beards are getting longer.-JD

  69. Jeff M. August 4, 2009 10:49 pm

Perhaps if the Home Run Apple could spout a pillar of flame, we could exorcise these demons…

Annie, did you fall asleep and miss the exciting conclusion, or just get so disgusted you turned off even Howie and Wayne?

  70. Annie Savoy August 5, 2009 6:44 am

    Jeff – I fell asleep.

  71. Harry Chiti August 5, 2009 7:30 am

You know how you know you support a really really horrible team. when your ace gives up 5 freakin runs and people complain how he got ripped off cause he didn’t get the win, your team is awful!

By the way, watching the B-Mets was more pitiful than watching the NY Mets. The highlight f the game was when the Met pitcher was HbP and they sent a catcher to the pen to warm up a guy and you could hear yelling that it was the 4th inning why should he warm up now. Result 1.2 innings of stellar releif only giving up 5 runs. He’s ready for the citymorgue stadium.

  72. wonthedamngame August 5, 2009 8:13 am

I think this game might be the slippery slope toward falling 10 games under .500 and playing out the string.

  73. Steve The Original August 5, 2009 10:39 am

Last night was a prime example of why Manuel needs to be fired at the end of the year. He treated the 10th inning like it was the last game of the World Series when everyone knows the pen has been spent over the past few games. Instead of leaving in Feliciano who has been getting righties out too, he brings in Schoenweis/Heilman redux in Green. Not to mention , Stokes should have stayed in more than one batter as well. As far as Johan goes…shut up. You’re ERA at the end of the season isn’t supposed to be “5″ I realize that sometimes the ace of the staff can have an off game…but not in this case when the team needs the win desparately. Regardless, another riddiculous loss in a riddiculous season.

  74. Steve The Original August 5, 2009 10:41 am

At least we’d be in line for a nice high draft pick if the slide conti….oh wait a minute….we don’t have a high draft pick this year.

  75. wonthedamngame August 5, 2009 11:40 am

Has anyone seen Aaron Heilman and Sean Green in the same room at the same time? 2 in a row for him. They have me at apathetic now. No reaction from last night other than resignation. Seems like eons ago that Wright and Reyes were stomping around Shea with cigars after clinching the division in 06. Who could have predicted that would be the finest moment they have had in the last 4 seasons.
