John, that's a beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing it.

I heard Marty Appel on FAN a week or two ago, and when he mentioned that the other two people in the plane had survived -- in fact, Munson had survived the crash -- I was shocked; I'd never known that. Today I read more about it in an article about the book, and found out that he had, in fact, managed to land the plane in a field, but the wing clipped a tree causing a sudden, jarring stop, and he was paralyzed. The other two tried to get him out, but he was a dead weight, they couldn't move him and the plane caught fire. His last words were to ask if they were okay. It's truly heartbreaking.

Thats a very nice piece, John. The thing I remember most about Munson well 2 things. When he first came up and I was about 10 or so, I remember friends and I Making sport of how his name resembled Herman Munster. the 2nd memory was of his perfomance in the 76 WS and Sparky Andersons famous comment about dont embarrass any catcher by comparing them to Johnny Bench.

Dan (3): I remember Torre talking of that moment. He didn't know what to do. It must have been overpoweringly uncomfortable.-JD

The Marty Appel biography on Munson has a picture of the Shea Stadium scoreboard announcing the death of Munson. Mets management felt it was more appropriate to do it that way instead of a public address. Tim McCarver says he never heard a ballpark as quiet than Shea was.
