METS CHAT ROOM: Game #104; Finally playing after long delay.

Why can’t it rain when Oliver Perez pitches? Today’s game will be delayed by rain.

First things first, Perez is not inconsistent. Inconsistent means he mixes in a good game every once in awhile. It’s not that way. He’s consistent in that you know he’ll walk at least five and give up five or so runs. Yeah, that will do it.

It was a bad signing. The worst. But, that’s no longer news. I’m thinking next year they have to consider him in the bullpen role. He couldn’t do any worse because he would pitch less innings.

There’s injury news today. Jose Reyes is resting again. He’s not close to being ready. Carlos Beltran, meanwhile, took some batting practice. He’s closer, but has no date on him. Gary Sheffield has been activated from the disabled list, but isn’t in the line-up today against Arizona’s Jon Garland. JJ Putz hopes to throw Wednesday.

Here’s the line-up for the 50-53 Mets behind Pelfrey, that is, if they play:

Angel Pagan, CF
Luis Castillo, 2B
David Wright, 3B
Daniel Murphy, 1B
Jeff Francoeur, RF
Cory Sullivan, LF
Alex Cora, SS
Brian Schneider, C
Mike Pelfrey, RP (4-2, 3.90 ERA)

NOTE: Today is the 30th anniversary of the death of Thurman Munson. I once interviewed his widow and posted that story below. I hope you’ll take a read.-JD

  1. John – the Munson story is one of your best pieces of work, thank you for posting it.

  2. Where is everybody. Isnt it raining in New York today? Anyway, I couldnt agree with you more about Ollie. The worst free agent signing ever by the Mets and the worst I can remember of any team in my memory. Big Pelfs looking good today. Figgy gets the start tomorrow against Haren which improves our chances a bit.

  3. Hi Ray – It is raining in NY – maybe everyone is napping. I like Nelson Figueroa and am glad he is getting another chance with the Big Team. Still can’t get over the Grand Slam last night…

  4. I keep waiting for Pelfrey to step up, but he really doesn’t. Not as bad as Perez, but then again, few pitchers are. But, Pelfrey continues to be disappointing.-JD

  5. He looked safe to me, too, but I guess the edge of his foot just scraped by the plate.

    What happened to the no-hitter?

  6. The Figgy love affair. Why? Cause he does good in places like Buffalo and New Orleans? The guy was DFA’d, tested free agency and came crawling back because not even the lowliest teams wanted a whiff of him.
Hey Sadecki, Francoer can’t walk but he’s a heck of a lot better than the fraud at third. The guy who’s too chicken to swing for power because he has to play in a big park, Wahwah…. David Wright, learn to hit with power again……

  7. Watching this game I know how Sissiphus felt pushing that boulder up the hill only to see it keep rolling down.

  8. Hi Again – Just had the obligatory weekend visit from one of my sons (doesn’t like sports, is into airplanes and motorcycles) what have I missed?

  9. Looks like the Mets need some more 8th-inning heroics to have any shot… assuming Dbacks don’t put it out of reach now by scoring this guy from 3rd…

  10. Howie has put this game “in the books” — it’s been a dismal day.

    Final score Arizona 5 – Mets 2.

One more chance for the Mets to avoid being swept comes tomorrow at 7:10PM on SNY.

    See you then…

  11. To all optimists. Its over. Its not 7.5. Its 7.5 plus 7.5 plus whatever number all the other teams are ahead.
To Omar: Let the stars heal completely. Tell them to meet team in St Lucie next February.

  12. RE:(11) Oops, I forgot about the Grand Slam – Mets will not be swept by the Rox, no matter what happens tomorrow.

  13. Jeff M(15) I’ve been watching one of those CPTV pledge programs – tonight it’s music from the movies… really nice.

  14. Yep, i’ll admit..they suckered me in again. But I should have known better. They just don’t have the horses to do this.

  15. This team is on the verge of losing 3 of 4 to the lousy dbax. At home yet. Time to pack it in now.

  16. 7. Chiti- Yeah, Wright is having a bit of an off year that would be a career year for a lot of players. At least he is on the field everyday trying. I am so tired of Reyes. I hope they can get him to have a healthy year so they can trade him already.

  17. 21. So you are saying the injured guys are all fakers and Wright is a man? Come on….
Hey, Wright is having a fine year for a leadoff guy. You want your power guy to hit singles with nobody on and whiff every time there are guys to drive in fine, put him at # 1 and I’ll shut up. People say he can’t drive in runs witrh this lineup but wait, its doable… Francoer an RBI a game. What’s with that David Wright. Want to hit all singles, ask the jokester manager to bat you lead off.
