Perez update

Oliver Perez, on the DL since May 7, threw three shutout innings in an extended spring training game in Port St. Lucie. He gave up three hits and one walk with five strikeouts and reported no pain.

“I felt really good,” Perez said. “I’m a little tired because it’s hot, but I feel strong. I threw three innings, and I was using all my pitches. I used my slider, backdoor, in good situations, behind the count, my change-up, too. I’m happy I had good command, and I was throwing a lot of strikes.”

Perez will throw again Tuesday.

While the news is encouraging, it must be tempered with the fact he’s basically starting over and will need at least three more games before he’s ready. That puts his return in early July at best.

Never mind the results, the important thing is he felt no discomfort in his knee.

In other injury news: John Maine threw in a simulated game and still feels a pinch in his shoulder. … Angel Pagan could be back in New York within two weeks. … Billy Wagner could face hitters by the first week in July.

  1. Gotta love the Mets medical team. Wasn’t Maine supposed to pitch a day earlier. They pushed him back, but said it was not an indication of setback. Now he reports a continued “pinch”. What is more likely to come next, ML reappearance or the knife? My gut tells me the latter.

  2. Having nothing to do with this post, Aaron Heilman is performing putridly for the Cubs this year. He already has almost as many blown saves for the Cubs (4) as he did for the Mets (5) last year. 4.50 ERA too, highest WHIP in the past three years. Glad to hear about Ollie, bad news about Maine…that’s another 10 day setback at least.

  3. Phills lost again 8 to 7 to the Jays. Hopefully the Mets can slice another game off the lead. The Phills are very beatable this year…figures that we have to have all these injuries and an awful manager to boot.

  4. One more note on Heilman that is pretty funny.
Some Met fans think we should have gotten more for him when he was traded.

  5. it would be great if ollie would come back within a month and contribute, but i wont hold my breath.

  6. Are my eyes deceiving me? Are folks actually anticipating the Return of Coin Flip as an encouraging milestone?

More intriguing, JD, what do you think is going to happen with Billy Wagner? I never thought I would see him again in a Mets uniform, but if he’s ready to face hitters in July, what are they going to do with him?
