Talking Jerry ….

A year of Jerry

A year of Jerry

Today is the one-year anniversary of Jerry Manuel taking over as manager of the Mets.

The Mets are basically the same place they were last year at this time, which is struggling to contend, but they are contending. It is very easy to say that had the Mets all their parts they could be in first place ahead of the Phillies. Losing Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, JJ Putz, Oliver Perez (the good Ollie) and John Maine has to amount to a handful of losses.

I’m not crazy about the inconsistency of the line-up, but I understand most of that is because of injuries. The use of some players has been puzzling, most notably Daniel Murphy. If you believe he’s your first baseman of the future, then put him there and leave him there. Scap the platoon with Fernando Tatis.

I’ve never understood the dynamic of his relationship with Ryan Church. Something isn’t right there. There are also some bullpen moves I don’t understand, such as sitting Brian Stokes for over a week.

Overall, he’s done more good than bad. They are hitting better with runners in scoring position – the numbers bear that out – but there seems to be too many instances of lackadaisical play, where balls aren’t run out and at-bats are given away. That has to get better.

Overall, what do you think of Jerry’s job over the past year. Do you approve? Disapprove? What do you like? What don’t you like?

  1. Great interview, terrible manager. Doesn’t know how to handle the lineups or his bench. No discipline, lack of fundamentals either which may or may not be his fault. But we were led to believe at the beginning of spring training that the Mets would be a very sound fudamental ballclub under his tutalege. Good point about him which i’ll give is that the team bounces back. But if they continue to have to do that the rest of the year, they’re going to be in trouble.

  2. Jerry is more vocal than Willie. That is important.
However, as for the managing part, I feel that he needs to lean heavier on teh starters to perform. and leave them in and only take them out when they are definitely off. Also, I was expecting far more stealing and hit and runs. small ball.
However, Jerry aside, I believe most of the fault is with the players and communication and playing as a team.

  3. Before it gets too late I would replace the guy along with his first, third, and pitching coach. Jerry to me is just picking favorites and trashing players like Ryan Church. He has to have Some of the players totally confused with his platoon here and not platoon but swap back and forth crap. The general manager says the team has no edge but when Wright steals a few bases or tries and gets caught the Jerry trashes him for trying.

Hiw method of using his pitchers is abominal

His method of using his pitchers is abominable, he put Takahashi in for three power lefties when his average against lefties is bad. He was supposed to be the long guy and suddenly Jerry says he’s a situational pitcher used for lefties…is this guy paying any attention to what he says and then does something different. This kind of crap is going to totally kill the motivation of the team and it’s showing!

  5. You’ve heard it before. The criticsms are correct. Plays favorites. Lies to the players about their roles, oh excuse me, he changes his mind about their roles regularly. He has made himself into the NY clown, a role usually reserved for someone in the Bronx. He jerks guys around blatantly. He may win sme games, based on the talent of players like Santana Wright and Beltran but he gets an F. Woirse than Joe Frazier, worse than Torborg, worse than Westrum and Buddy and Willie. He’s the only one who blatantly jerked his guys around, demeaned them to the press regularly and couldn’t figure out what the story was because there are 162 of them with this fool. I have undertand from some Sox fans that the players camew to truly hate him in the South Side. I’m sure most of them hate him here already, except for his pets, Sheffield and Santos and Green.

  6. yeah

he hates church. church is one of the better defensive players – does he like defense? – yet he goes out of his way to trash him. when he missed 3rd – a terrible play he spent 15 minutes trashing him 10 ways to sunday. when castillo drops the ball that wins the game, its lets get them next time. everyone makes mistakes.

injuries are part of the game. every coach including his predecessor had to deal. deal.

he gave murphy left until he didnt. he sits him and doesnt play him. now, i know murphy is not the best defensive player, but he seems to be more comfortable at 1b. the team is looking for consistency.

everyone knows you get consistency by jerking your players around.

bottom line, he is not the worst manager. perhaps a bit better and more consistent than the last one, but they can do better.

  7. Jerry is not perfect and I have gotten on him here at times. I would still take him any day over Willie. At least he argues with the umpires half the time. Keith Hernandez says the latin players hated him and got him fired. But he was a winner as he told everybody who would listen.
