Mets sign Garcia

GARCIA: Worth the gamble.

GARCIA: Worth the gamble.

GM Omar Minaya said a team can’t have enough pitching, that he’s always interested in stockpiling bodies for spring training.

Freddy Garcia, 34, who has pitched in just 14 games the last two seasons because of an injured shoulder, qualifies more as a body than he does certified pitching. He’s logged only 73 combined innings with Detroit and Philly the last two years, but was worth the risk to be signed to a minor league deal last night that could balloon to $7.5 million with incentives (starts and/or innings).

Garcia won 17 games for the 2006 White Sox, and the Mets had some interest after that season. At this point, Garcia is another body, but a good signing if he’s healthy for that cost. It also sends a message to Oliver Perez they aren’t waiting.

  1. As I said in the earlier topic, the fact that this is a minor league deal is good. It doesn’t take a deserving roster spot from someone who might have been on the bubble.

What I don’t agree with is that it sends a message to Perez. The Mets signing Sheets or Wolf would do that, not bringing in Freddy Garcia.

  2. Delcos: This is very strange. You are forcing me to agree with papermache. How does signing a worn out pitcher to a minor league contract send a message to any free agent pitcher? If the guy was assumed to be a major league starter someone would have given him a major league deal. If it sends a mesage it is more likely to John Maine who the Mets seem to want to force to arbitration We’ll take care of a Garcia with up to 8-9 mil by not being on the DL but not you John Maine…. We’ll fight you for every buck we can. See ya on your new team John when you become a FA.

  3. Chiti- OK, While its not a strong message, It is still the Mets signalling that they are willing to go in other directions. Ollie and Boras are waiting for the Mets to cave. Why should they? nobody else wants the fool. Time to sheet or get off the pot. It looks like wolfies going back to L.A.- Thats OK as long as we get big Ben over here.

  4. As for the move, I guess this is the end of Martinez being a Met. I Would have rather seen him get this kind of deal, but he probably is too proud to accept a minor league deal.

  5. Dave: Are you insinuating that Garcia is the #2? I’d like to think Pelf is the 2, followed by Maine 3, hopefully our 4 will be Perez/Sheets following by the gang competing for 5. Obviously if Sheets signs he slots into #2 and the rest moves back.

I am stating that our rotation is the following:

    Garcia
    Pelfrey
    Santana
    Redding
    Maine

    In that order.

  7. The Garcia signing is a solid move that could pay off rather handsomely. But if the Mets really are “done” and don’t add another SP, they are putting an awful lot of eggs in one basket.

It will be very disappointing if they in fact don’t add Perez or Sheets, not to mention Wolf who seems to be going back to LA.

  8. Andrew Marchand of 1050 ESPN Radio says that he’s heard from a “source” that the Mets would ultimately go to four years for Perez.

Also says they are gaining interest in Sheets and that while his medical history is a point of interest, it’s not overly bad.

  9. Minor league deals are a dime a dozen. Anyone thinking they are great or terrible are making mountains out of moehills. They help fill the AAA roster and give the GMs guys to call up who aren’t not ready for prime time prospects.

  10. Chiti, Yes, thats true most of the time. I think thats whats going on with all these outfielder sighings. They Have no AAA outfielders. But Im sure that veterans who have been sucessful in the past and are coming off injury is a different story.

I reposted the above since apparently mrmet did not hear me the first time :)

  12. trying to be obvious about the sarcasm.

i think we should sign OP and Sheets. I like Sheets, but like everyone else he is an injury problem.
